Heritage Stories
Caribbeans who became part of the Windrush Generation began arriving in Britain from the late 1940s, answering the call to help rebuild the “Mother Country” and support the newly formed NHS. Their journeys were shaped by hope, courage, and a determination to create new futures, even as they faced hardship, prejudice, and the challenges of a changing nation. In this collection, interviewees share their lived experiences of coming to the UK to work in the NHS. Their stories reveal how their cultural heritage, resilience, and commitment to care helped strengthen the NHS and left a lasting imprint on British society.
